A few weeks ago I was up in Yosemite camping for the weekend when I overheard one of the park rangers visiting our camp ground mention “meteor shower tonight”.  My ears immediately perked up and I quickly realized that Perseid Meteor Shower was happening during my visit.  What better place to try and photograph Perseids than the darkness of Yosemite!

That evening I headed up to Olmstead Point to setup for a timelapse sequence.  I ended up meeting four other photographers from the Bay Area and spending 4 hours letting the camera record a couple hundred photos.  In the end, I had captured 20 different meteor’s streaking through the sky before the partial moon rose in the east.  The above image is a composite of all 20 meteor’s radiating out from the constellation Perseus (the namesake for the meteor shower).

This photo is part of my Yosemite National Park gallery where art prints can be purchased.

As an informal gear recommendation, the REI Comfort Recliner Camp chair makes for a great viewing platform for meteor showers.  I happened to pick one up before my trip to replace my old camp chair.  The most reclined of the 3 adjustable reclining positions was perfect for watching the sky!
