While at the Asilomar State Beach this past weekend I also was able to spot a sandpiper hunting along the surf.  It wasn’t until I got home and looked more closely that I realized it was actually a Curlew, part of the same general family but they have the curved beak.  What drew my eye to him was the reflection in the wet sand.

And I kept my eye on him knowing that there was another wave coming in.  This allowed me to record him just as he was about to take off before the water reached him.

And this brings up one of the first lessons I’ve learned over the past 60 days…how closely you all are tracking my project.  Because I got no complaints when I missed a day!  🙂

Don’t get me wrong, I was down on myself…but the requirements of the day job combined with getting everything done before our long family weekend just cut me short of time and energy.  So, I’m giving myself this one mulligan on leap day…posting two images on the same day.  That and I didn’t want to have another turkey fest like back in January by posting a string of curlew photos.

A few of the other lessons that I need to investigate are related to the engagement rates from Facebook and Google when you post links to your content instead of the content directly.  I know some would say that the the individual has lost the content battle…that you have to post directly to the social media sites to get views.  But I’m still an archivist at heart…realizing that doing so leaves my photographic history at the whims of others.  So if time allows I may have to do some tests of a week of direct posts versus a week of link posts.

Honestly, the biggest reason I don’t do the direct posts is lack of time.  By the time I develop my photos and then upload them to my online archive and my blog (different services) and then link them together and build the consistency across the two…well, there isn’t much time left.  This just tells me that the business idea I had 10 years ago for FocalPower as a photographic content management and distribution system is still valid from a time saving perspective.  The amazing thing is that after all this time, I still haven’t heard or found a service that solves that problem yet.

  1. Personally, I admire anyone that takes on the challenging commitment of posting photos every day. Greg.

I have noticed the same thing on FB, posting links doesn’t get the response as the direct photo there. Perhaps just because people when in FB, would rather stay there vs switching around?

Curlews are very cool birds – I wish I saw them around my area more often.
