Photo: Catching The Sunrise

Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell at the time of taking this photo what bird this was. So I’m not sure if it was an Egret or Heron. Not that it makes a difference for the photo, under these conditions both birds are from the same family and have similar silhouettes.

Recently I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium with my family. One of the highlights is always the Jelly Fish exhibit that they have at the aquarium. So it’s no surprise that I took photos of the jellies when I was there visiting. However, today while working on these photos it struck me that you usually don’t see black and white photos of jelly fish. After playing around with a couple of different settings, I found a look that I think gives a new twist the the jelly fish.
For comparison, here are the color versions of the same images. Clicking on either set for a larger slide show view.

Earlier this weekend, while hiking to the summit of Mount Tamalpais (Mount Tam), I was able to capture this shot of a local resident. We were leaving the summit when the Manzanita bush right next to the trail started to shake. My wife and I stopped to see if we could find the shaker. Here was a local chipmunk, no longer than 3 inches, scrambling up to the top branches to grab a berry and scoot back down into the bush to eat. It was very difficult to try and capture this image, between shooting up into the sun, the sun washing out the branches, and then getting the chipmunk in focus and not one of the nearby branches. Eventually, persistance paid off!
I realized this morning that I’m lacking photos in my wildlife photography portfolio on the website (there wasn’t even a pure wildlife portfolio yet!). For some reason, the wildlife photos that I have taken have never made it up to the website. I’ll have to work on addressing this moving forward…

Photo: Backyard California Quail
Posted by latoga | Filed under Photos, Wildlife
This past weekend, I was leaving home to meet up with Richard Wong for a day of shooting in San Francisco. As I left home I had to slam on the breaks as crossing the road out of our cul-du-sac was a brood of California Quail. We have had a number of California Quail visiting our back yard bird feeder for over a year now. This is the first time we have seen a new brood.
As the small brood of three chicks, Mom, and Dad crossed the road, one of the chicks had difficulty hopping up over the curb.
He was so small, he was about one third the height of the curb. I’m taking a guess that this could have been one of the first trips out that the brood took. Eventually the whole family turned around and headed back where they came from. After a bit of struggling, the last chick finally got over the curb and joined the family safely in the bushes.
