Awestruck by the World Wide Telescope

This afternoon I got a bit distracted from the presentation I was supposed to be crafting; but in the nature of the internet, sometimes wandering leads you to amazing things. That’s what just happened to me as I discovered the TED preview of the World Wide Telescope. (If you have a broadband network connection, trust me by not visiting the TED page–which auto plays the movie–but download the high definition movie instead.)

Microsoft Research developed The World Wide Telescope using their Virtual Experience Engine technology; the same technology (I assume) that is behind PhotoSynth (which I wrote about on my non-photography blog…).

This is an amazing user experience…and I can only image the horsepower needed to make this work…and can’t wait till it’s publicly available.

Now, time to stop dreaming of star treking and get back to my presentation…
